CIA Language Academy holds speech contest every two weeks. We provide different topic for each contest. The students can join the contest if they are interested in the topic. It’s a good opportunity to express oneself.

To a shy person, like me, can’t even deliver a speech in Chinese, not to mention about in English. I never thought I would join the speech contest; however, the topic was “I am proud of being a Taiwanese/ Korean/ Japanese”. After seeing this topic, I started to consider seriously if I should join the contest. Amount more than 120 students, there were just a few Taiwanese in this academy; the maximum is 5 at the same time. Most of the teachers, the staff, and the students didn’t know Taiwan well, so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to introduce Taiwan to everyone.

With my patriotism I decided to participate; I joined the contest on Nov. 4th, 2011. I felt extremely nervous while delivering my English speech in front of more than 100 people, thus, I couldn’t help trembling. In order not to be detected, I put my hands into my pockets.

Four students joined the speech contest at that time. Although Ididn’t win, I had a precious experience. In addition, the teachers and the students started to know our lovely country - Taiwan after my speech.

This is the link of my speech

The following is the script of my speech:

What is Taiwan?
Sometimes when I say “Hi, I come from Taiwan.”, people might think I come from Thailand. No! It is totally different.
Taiwan is an independent country. Although most of Taiwanese came from the same Chinese race, and both of Taiwanese and Chinese can speak Mandarin. But Taiwan is not part of China.

What does Taiwan look like?
My home country, Taiwan, is a small island, so we can go everywhere very easily. There are modern cities, spectacular mountain areas, and breath-taking beaches.
Our capital, Taipei, is the biggest city in Taiwan. Maybe it is not as prosperous as Tokyo or Seoul. But you can find everything you want, for example, restaurants, shopping malls, museums, and everything else.
It is a mountainous country. The highest one is Yushan. It is 3952 meters in height. If you are a mountain-climber, maybe you can give yourself a shot to visit this spectacular mountain.
Taiwan is also surrounded by ocean, so we have many lovely coasts around Taiwan. My favorite one is Kenting. There are beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, delicious seafood, and wonderful night-life.
We have a saying about Taiwan: ”Watch sunrise in the mountain, have lunch in the city, and watch sunset at the beach, it only takes one day.”

What is the best thing to do in Taiwan?
Some of my friends in CIA have already been to Taiwan. They said the best thing to do there is eating. I totally agree with them. There are night-markets everywhere. You can get a lot of delicious cheap food easily. Taiwanese food is similar to Chinese food, but we have developed our own flavor. If you are an adventurous person, you can try the Pig-blood-cake and the Stinky Tofu.
The pig-blood-cake is made of rice and pig’s blood. It is served with soy sauce and peanut powder. According to a travel website in England, it is the strangest food in the world, but trust me, it is out of world.
Although the Stinky Tofu has a strong smell, but if you eat it with special sauce and Taiwanese style Kimchi, it tastes so good.

What kind of culture do we have?
Most of us are following traditional Chinese culture. But every culture has its own bad side. We are willing to adapt good thing from other countries to improve our culture. So there is a mix-culture in Taiwan.

What kind of person are we?
Most of Taiwanese are hard-working and friendly people. I have never had any experience working with Japanese, but I’ve had an experience working with Korean when I was in Australia. We always competed with Korean friends, and we work as hard as Korean do.
Don’t worry about getting lost if you travel in Taiwan. Most of People in Taiwan are very friendly. We are willing to guide you on your way home, or invite you to our home for dinner.

Once again, I come from Taiwan. I am proud to be a Taiwanese.
